OBITUARY: Kyabje Chogye Trichen Rinpoche

Dharamshala: Tuesday, January 23, 2007 (Tibet.net) - The Central Tibetan
Administration mourns the demise of Kyabje Chogye Trichen Rinpoche, head of
Tsharpa branch of the Sakya Tradition of Tibetan Buddhism.
 
The former secretary of the Department of Religion and Culture breathed his
last in Nepal yesterday morning, at the age of 87.
 
As a mark of respect, the departments and offices of the Administration
remained closed yesterday afternoon, following an hour-long prayer session
at 3 p.m.
 
Kyabje Chogye Trichen Rinpoche was a renowned tantric master, a dedicated
practitioner, an outstanding scholar and an eloquent poet.
 
His Eminence Sakya Trizin, head of the Sakya tradition of Tibetan Buddhism,
described the great accomplishments of Kyabje Chogye Trichen Rinpoche as:
 
"There are many who have attained the wisdom arising from the study of the
Scriptures. There are some who have attained the wisdom arising from
contemplation of the Dharma. There are few who have gained wisdom arising
from meditation.
 
"His Eminence Chogye Trichen Rinpoche is one who has attained all three
wisdoms. One should consider oneself fortunate just to meet him, which is in
itself a great blessing."

Students Care Service (SCS) is a voluntary social work organisation registered with the Registrar of Societies and Commisioner of Charities. It is affiliated to the National Council of Social Service and part-funded by NCSS / Community Chest. SCS has been providing direct social work services to students and their families since it was founded in 1976. Core services provided by our agency include:

There are 3 centres spread across Singapore. Currently, the Clementi Centre of SCS is recruiting volunteers to reach out and make a difference in the lives of more children and youths. The details of the programmes are as follow: 
 
1) Podz Youth Mentoring (Target Group: Youths)
 

Description                    : Podz Youth Mentoring is a community project for youths completing their rehabilitation programme with MCYS.

 

                                       We?¡¥re looking for people who have been through teenage life and can relate comfortably to teenagers. People who would take the trouble, get to know a teenager, and allow                                                 teenagers to get to know them as a friend.

 

                                        So if you?¡¥re thinking of a meaningful journey that can make a difference in a teenager,  the SCS Podz Youth Mentoring invites you to come on board.

 

                                        Give it a try ?you might just change a life. Or it might change yours.  

                                       

Role of volunteers            : Befriend and guide youths in their transition back to the community.

                                         Meet youth for up to 3 times per month for a period of 1 year.

2) Soccer Interest Group (Target Group: Youths)
 
Description                : Soccer is used as a medium to engage and greater reach out to teenage boys. Through soccer, lifeskills such as discipline, anger management, perseverance etc, are imparted to                                             youths.
 
Role of volunteers        : Asist Volunteers would assist social workers in: 
                                          - assisting/ coaching for soccer
                                          - being a role model for the youths in the soccer group
                                          - As many of the teenage boys will be entering into NS when they complete their education, it would                                                             be helpful if volunteers have had completed NS.
 
Frequency                    : Once a week on Saturday mornings during the academic calendar.

3)  Home-based Reading Programme (Target Group: Children)

Description                    : The programme is about making a difference in the life of young children. It is about empowering children for better successes in life. It is about equipping children with essential                                             skills to cope better with school and life. 

                                       One of the essential skills for better success in school is the ability to read. Unfortunately for this group of children, they have yet to develop the necessary reading skills to cope                                             with their current school work. For some, they may not even know how to read or have had experienced the joy of reading.

                                        And you can make a difference by contributing your time to read with them!

                                        The reading programme aims to provide a positive reading experience for children.


Role of Volunteers        : To provide weekly reading of story to students for 8 (Mar - June & Aug - Nov) months
                                       Conduct pre- and post-test
                                       Attend all training and review sessions with staff
                                       Provide weekly feedback to staff through email
