[CASonline] Uncommon Bodhicitta & CAS's Annual Monks Sponsorship

Dearest Friends @ CAS,

Drepung Monastery: one of the "Three Pillars of Tibet"

Je Tzongkhapa:
"The founding of Drepung Monastery shall surpass the
mother monastery of Ganden and all of its ( Gelugpa's )
myriad branch monasteries in spiritual depth, flourishing
and perfection."
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

We  "REJOIE FULLY !!" to have offered our annual offering ( with full gratitude to our friends @ CAS !! ) to our monks in Drikung Kagyu with Ontrul Rinpoche, Khenpo Rangdol and the Incomparable Lord Master Garchen Rinpoche , Sera Je and Drepung Loseling and to have been doing so for more than the past decade especially for the latter two "Great Seats of Learning".

Just to share with our friends the critical significance of these three "Great Seats of Learning", sometimes also called "The Three Pillars" of the Drepung, Sera and Ganden monasteries, where almost every major Masters of Tibet paid their respects to and made offerings throughout the centuries right down to the present Sakya Trizin, the Karmapa and even the Dalai Lama Himself:

During the iron-snake year, ( 1941 ), Shugsep Jetsun ( the great female lineage-holder of the Longchen Nyingthig whose lineal blessings is transmitted to every major Nyingma Master alive today ), was visited by the official Manager of the Great Prayer Festival and his wife ..... they asked to remain at the nunnery and receive her teachings.
She replied, "Three three great monasteries Sera, Drepung and Ganden are full of great bodhisattvas. Why are you so helpless that you ignore them and come to me with this request? You are being foolish behaving in this way", and sent them away ....
Cho-Yang ( 1991 )

Again:
The first indication we had that my master ( Khyentse Chokyi Lodro - Teacher of the Sakya Trizin, the 16th Karmapa ) was going to die was through Gyalwang Karmapa. He told Karmapa that he had completed the work he had come to do in this life, and he had decided to leave this world. One of Khyentse's close attendants burst into tears as soon as Karmapa revealed this to him, and then we knew. His death was eventually to occur just after we had heard that the three great monasteries of Tibet: Sera, Drepung, and Ganden, had been occupied by the Chinese. It seemed tragically symbolic that as Tibet collapsed, so this great being, the embodiment of Tibetan Buddhism, was passing away.
( Sogyal Rinpoche in 'The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying' )

Our annual offerings does not come easy but is panistakingly scrimped and saved from Camden Education Center's accumulation of fees every minutes and seconds of teaching and teaching and yet more teaching.

More importantly, it is the trust and loyalty of so many of our Friends @ CAS ( in our Monk Sponsorship Project & who support our Dharma Propagation Fund through purchasing our Dharma Items !! ) who create literally boundless merit through supporting the last bastion of genuine Dharma in this Degenerate Age.

Whe wish our precious Sangha in these great monasteries perfect Conduct, Meditation and Wisdom - nothing but complete and full Enlightenment !!

Also keeping in mind Camden Education Center's students and their coming exams: "Everything best with blessings from all of us !!"

bb & all rejoicings animals    @ CAS blessed by holy Chenrezig

At Dharamsala, while the late Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche is passing transmissions to the Dalai Lama, Khyentse Rinpoche requested the Dalai Lama for a prayer to recite for fulfillment of all His ( the Dalai Lama's ) holy wishes. From His enlightened mind, the Dalai Lama wrote the attached prayer ( thanks FS !! ) to Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche: http://www.fpmt.org/education/EBP2006updates/pdf/pryrhhdlwisheslzrjuly07lttr.pdf

In July this year, the entire Nyingma Tradition offered Long-life Prayers and request to His Holiness the Dalai Lama to stay long in the world for good of th Dharma and all mother beings. ..... the search committee members of the reincarnation consisting of Shechen Rabjam Rinpoche, Tulku Pema Wangyal, Namkai Norbu Rinpoche, Jigme Khyentse Rinpoche, Chokling Rinpoche, Neten Chokling Rinpoche, Tulku Ugyen Rinpoche, Dakini of late Khyentse Rinpoche and the manager of their monasteries ..... Ven. Trulshik Rinpoche advised that before making any public announcement, it was vitally important that the committee approach His Holiness the Dalai Lama and request for the first cutting of the reincarnation's hair, receive His blessed name and guidance for the future.....

.... Since there had been remarkable signs before and after the birth of my son, it was necessary to have a high Lama to cut the first growth of the child's hair. But my father ( Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, a Teacher of the late 16th Karmapa ) casually said that it was not proper for him to do the hair cutting. He insisted that the time would come when a higher Lama will perform the first haircut. I thought my father was simply lazy. I never thought something important was lying hidden within his message ....

.... After about 3 months, Trulshik Rinpoche came to Pharping for the retreat. We went there and the auspicious robe-dressing ceremony was performed. But he left the hair to be cut and the name to be given by H.H. Dalai Lama. Trulshik Rinpoche reiterated that during all his past three years of divine tests convinced him that his root Guru Ven. Dhilgo Khyentse Rinpoche's reincarnation will finally be recognized only by the Head of all the Buddhist sects, His Holiness the Dalai Lama as an ultimate truth. He, therefore, told Ven. Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo Rinpoche that the committee of disciples must take the audience of H.H. the Dalai Lama and request His Holiness to perform the first hair-cutting rituals of the newly born reincarnation....

.... As requested by the search committee, His Holiness gave a new name to the reincarnation as UGYEN-TENZIN JIGME DHONDRUP, and composed a long life prayer, which was published for public reading....

.... His Holiness pointed out that the predecessor of Dhilgo Khyentse Rinpoche had 108 Gurus irrespective of a difference in the sects. Therefore, this reincarnation must follow the path shown by his great predecessors. His Holiness clarified this point by saying that he should receive the initiations, oral transmissions, and teachings from the lineage of 4 sects......

Quote/s from the Buddha's holy scripture

Long ago, monks, in a time gone by, there arose in the world, perfectly awakened tathagata named Vipashyin ( Visionary ) .....

In Bandhumati there was a certain merchant named Otkarika. At the sight of Lord Vipashyin, whose form was a sight one never tired of seeing, great faitharose in him. Possessed of faith, he took a handful of mung beans and tossed them in Lord Vipashyin's bowl. Four mung beans fell into his bowl, while one hit the rim and fell on the ground. What was left didn't reach the bowl at all. Not reaching it, they fell on the ground.

Then the merchant, possessed of faith, made a fervent aspiration:
By virtue of this gift to a great one,
may i be a buddha, a sugata, a self-made man.
Having crossed, may i help great masses of people to cross,
those who couldn't cross under previous great victors.

The Blessed One said, "The merchant Otkarika was none other than me at that time and at that juncture..... as a result of that action, i surmounted the Trayastrimsa gods. Monks, if that mung bean had fallen in his bowl, given the situation, i would have established kingship, lordship, and dominion over gods and men alike....

Since offerings made to greatly compassionate lord buddha are very well rewarded, very beneficial, very glorious, and very extensive, awakening can occur in this existence.... Offerings should ( therefore ) be made to the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, and proper fervent dedications-aspirations should be made as well."

This was said by the Blessed One. With their minds uplifted, the monks welcomed the words of the Blessed One.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Compassion is the key to happiness
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By The Dalai Lama, For The Calgary Herald
September 30, 2009

The Following Column Was Written By The Dalai Lama For The Vancouver Sun,
Where He Acted As Editor For The Day On Satur-Day. We Are Running It In
Honour Of The Dalai Lama's Visit To Calgary, Which Begins Today Before He
Departs Friday Morning.

---
One great question underlies our experience, whether we think about it
consciously or not: What is the purpose of life?

I believe that the purpose of life is to be happy. From the moment of birth,
every human being wants happiness and does not want suffering. Neither
social conditioning nor education nor ideology affects this.

Therefore, it is important to discover what will bring about the greatest
degree of happiness.

For a start, it is possible to divide every kind of happiness and suffering
into two main categories: mental and physical.

Of the two, the mind exerts the greatest influence on most of us. Unless we
are gravely ill or deprived of basic necessities, our physical condition
plays a secondary role in life.

Hence, we should devote our most serious efforts to bringing about mental
peace.

From my own limited experience, I have found that the greatest degree of
inner tranquillity comes from the development of love and compassion.

The more we care for the happiness of others, the greater our own sense of
well-being becomes. Cultivating a close, warmhearted feeling for others puts
the mind at ease. This gives us the strength to cope with any obstacles we
encounter.

It is the ultimate source of success in life. We can strive gradually to
become more compassionate, we can develop both genuine sympathy for others'
suffering and the will to help remove their pain.

As a result, our own serenity and inner strength will increase.

The need for love lies at the very foundation of human existence. It results
from the profound interdependence we all share with one another.

Some of my friends have told me that, while love and compassion are
marvellous and good, they are not really very relevant. Our world, they say,
is not a place where such beliefs have much influence or power. They claim
that anger and hatred are so much a part of human nature that humanity will
always be dominated by them. I do not agree.

We humans have existed in our present form for about 100,000 years. I
believe that if during this time the human mind had been primarily
controlled by anger and hatred, our population would have decreased. But
today, despite all our wars, we find that the human population is greater
than ever.

This clearly indicates to me that love and compassion predominate in the
world.

True compassion is not just an emotional response but a firm commitment
founded on reason. Therefore, a truly compassionate attitude toward others
does not change even if they behave negatively.

Of course, developing this kind of compassion is not at all easy! As a
start, let us consider the following facts: Whether people are beautiful and
friendly or unattractive and disruptive, ultimately they are human beings,
just like one's self. Like one's self, they want happiness and do not want
suffering.

Now, when you recognize that all beings are equal in both their desire for
happiness and their right to obtain it, you automatically feel empathy and
closeness for them. Through accustoming your mind to this sense of universal
altruism, you develop a feeling of responsibility for others: the wish to
help them actively overcome their problems.

Let me emphasize that it is within your power, given patience and time, to
develop this kind of compassion. We should begin by removing the greatest
hindrances to compassion: anger and hatred.

As we all know, these are extremely powerful emotions and they can overwhelm
our entire mind. Nevertheless, they can be controlled and replaced by an
equally forceful energy that stems from compassion, reason and patience.

I must also emphasize that merely thinking about compassion and reason and
patience will not be enough to develop them. We must wait for difficulties
to arise and then attempt to practise them.

And who creates such opportunities? Not our friends, of course, but our
enemies. They are the ones who give us the most trouble. So if we truly wish
to learn, we should consider enemies to be our best teachers.

For a person who cherishes compassion and love, the practice of tolerance is
essential, and for that, an enemy is indispensable.

So we should feel grateful to our enemies, for it is they who can best help
us develop a tranquil mind. Also, it is often the case in both personal and
public life, that with a change in circumstances, enemies become friends. So
anger and hatred are our real enemies. These are the forces we most need to
confront and defeat, not the temporary enemies who appear intermittently
throughout life.

In conclusion, I would like briefly to expand my thoughts beyond the topic
of this short editorial and make a wider point: Individual happiness can
contribute in a profound and effective way to the overall improvement of our
entire human community.

Because we all share an identical need for love, it is possible to feel that
anybody we meet, in whatever circumstances, is a brother or sister.

It is foolish to dwell on external differences, because our basic natures
are the same.

I believe that at every level of society--familial, tribal, national and
international--the key to a happier and more successful world is the growth
of compassion.

All that is necessary is for each of us to develop our good human qualities.

Dalai Lama captivates Calgary; thousands hear spiritual leader
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Jamie Komarnicki, Calgary Herald
October 1, 2009

CALGARY - Thousands filled the Saddledome on Wednesday to hear a message of
compassion and peace from one of the world's most revered spiritual leaders.

Many among the Calgary audience said they were struck most by the simple
truth of the Dalai Lama's words in his first visit to the city in three
decades.

"The whole thing was just overwhelming, to see somebody like the Dalai Lama.
It was wonderful. It was almost peaceful. It was like he was talking to me,
person-to-person," said Henrietta MacGregor, 80.

"I just feel happy. He's awesome," added her granddaughter, Jasmine
MacGregor, 12.

The Dalai Lama enthralled the audience of nearly 15,000 for more than an
hour as he described the attitude needed to find both inner and outer peace.

"We are the same human beings. I want a happy life, you want a happy life.
On that level we can work together...make a common effort for a better
world," the exiled Buddhist leader said.

The Tibetan spiritual leader is in Calgary for the two-day NOW conference
hosted by the University of Calgary.

Draped in his monk's robes, he received a warm greeting as he was ushered to
the stage following a series of cultural performances and a traditional
welcome from native leaders.

The Dalai Lama often drew laughter as he threaded jokes through an otherwise
urgent message of peace. He also offered several personal tidbits in a
question-and-answer session with the audience, sharing his meditation
routine and noting his only pair of trousers are pyjamas.

Facing the clear adoration of many in the crowd, the Dalai Lama made a great
effort to describe himself as predominantly a simple monk. He underlined the
common humanity shared by all--including himself.

He also called for the end of violence and urged peace and compassion among
humankind.

"Each country heavily interconnected. That is today's reality," he said.
"The centuries-old concept of 'we' and 'they' according to this reality are
no longer there. We must consider the entire world as a part of 'we.'

"The destruction of your neighbour is destruction of yourself. The concept
of war is out of date."

The Tibetan leader has met his share of confrontation since he fled Tibet
after the Chinese invasion in 1959, with many arguing his political
leadership is controversial. When he travels the world, the Dalai Lama said
he focuses on a spiritual message of peace prompted by compassion, not fear.

Conflict is inevitable among humankind, he said. But the use of violence and
force is outdated and ineffective.

The Dalai Lama pointed to former U. S. president George W. Bush, a man he
said he loved and called a "straightforward" and "nice" person. But he said
the "violent methods" to address problems in Iraq and Afghanistan only give
way to "violent consequences."

Earlier Wednesday, the Dalai Lama arrived from Vancouver and was greeted at
the airport by a host of local leaders and Tibetan-Calgarians.

Mayor Dave Bronconnier and U of C president Harvey Weingarten presented the
Dalai Lama with a Tibetan ceremonial white scarf and a white cowboy hat.

In introducing the Tibetan leader, Weingarten noted the Dalai Lama views
himself as a simple monk.

"That he sees himself that way, says everything about the man who is one of
the most influential and inspirational voices for peace and inspiration in
the world today," Weingarten said.

He called the Dalai Lama an "extraordinary authority" on the international
dialogue of peace, harmony and social justice and said his "serene
influence" touches the hearts and minds of both influential leaders and
everyday people around the world.

The Tibetan leader was also awarded an honorary doctorate of laws Wednesday.
